RUBI Behavior Management
RUBI Parent Training for Disruptive Behaviors was designed to help identify and manage disruptive behaviors that occur in children who are diagnosed with autism spectrum disorder (ASD). Research has shown that many children with ASD have an increased number of problematic behaviors in the home, which is correlated with an elevated stress level in their caregivers. RUBI Parent Training has had success in decreasing the levels of problematic behaviors, decreasing parental stress, and increasing adaptive daily living and functioning. RUBI is a positive parenting approach, which focuses on rewarding and encouraging positive behavior. This comes from a core belief that there are no bad children, just good and bad behaviors. RUBI places emphasis on setting children up for success in their daily lives.

RUBI covers a wide variety of skills to address target behaviors such as tantrums, noncompliance, difficulties with transitions, and aggression. There are 11 core sessions of RUBI which cover topics ranging from behavior analysis, visual support systems, reinforcement, planned ignoring, and building of communication and livings skills. Additional sessions of RUBI are available to target sleep difficulties, toilet training, and both food selectivity and meal time behaviors. Through the course of RUBI, parents will learn how to determine appropriate interventions for behaviors, and when to utilize them.
RUBI is an approximately 12 to 16 session program between the caregivers and the clinician. This program is parent-based and does not require the presence of the child. Parents will meet weekly with me for an hour in which they will be using the RUBI Parent workbook to develop skills. Additionally, they will complete weekly skill building exercises in the home between sessions.
